Cape Hatteras: Cape Hatteras National Seashore spreads 70 miles down the Outer Banks barrier islands. Leave early in the morning and drive down Hwy. 12 for a beautiful scenic passage through a wildlife refuge and quaint little villages. It is a 4.5 hour drive, but if you stop in some of the villages, it may take a little longer. You will get to Buxton and you will be able to view the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, the tallest on the coast! Have lunch at Austin Creek Gill on Hatteras Island. Then you can take a car ferry over to Ocracoke Island, where the national park service has preserved over 5,000 acres and 16 miles of beach. Around mid-afternoon you will be heading back and you can beach-hop on many of the beautiful sandy beaches along the way. You’ll go to bed exhausted, but with great memories! Durham: “A Day in Durham” will keep you busy and bustling. You will experience city life with a tour of famous Duke University, with its beautiful, expansive campus. You will want to take a look at Duke’s Museum of Art as well. Then take the sidewalk on the east side of the campus to two unique shopping areas: Brightleaf Square and historic 9th Street. There are many fabulous restaurants to choose from in Durham: Magnolia Grill, Fairview, Bean Traders, and Nana’s Restaurant. You might want to try one for lunch and another for dinner.
Asheville: Make a day of history through Asheville.First, take a walking tour of what is known as Asheville’s Urban Trail. Travel by 30 sculptures depicting the history of downtown Asheville. You can rent an audiocassette with a description of each sculpture. Get this at the Pack Place Education Arts and Science Center. While you venture the downtown sidewalks, take special note of the Art Deco architecture all around—more than in any other southeastern city of the United States than Miami Beach. Make sure to see the magnificent tilt dome ceiling at St. Lawrence Bascilia. Have lunch at a quaint European bistro in the middle of downtown, New French Bar Country Café. Once you’re full, step across the street for some unique shopping at the Mast General Store. Next, visit the Thomas Wolfe Home, home of the famous author. For more shopping, drive just two miles from downtown to the historic Biltmore Village. It is claimed to be one of Asheville’s most unique and enjoyable shopping experiences. It is home to over 40 shops, restaurants and galleries, each housed in historic 1900-era homes and buildings. At the end of the day head back to town for a fine dinner at the Market Place Restaurant located on Wall Street right in the middle of downtown. Over 25 years it has a world-class restaurant.
