There are a number of different areas and neighborhoods that make up the city of Charlotte. Each one has its own personality and way of life. Listed below are some of the different neighborhoods located within Charlotte:
· Uptown: This area of Charlotte is located in the center of the city. Uptown Charlotte is divided into 4 wards, the First and Fourth Wards are mainly residential while the Second and Third Wards are more commercial. Homes in the Fourth Ward are generally homes from the 19th century with Queen Ann architecture. The majority of Charlotte’s skyscrapers are located in the uptown area. Also located in uptown Charlotte are the Bank of America Stadium, Charlotte Bobcats Arena, Johnson & Wales University, and the Charlotte Mint Museum.
· South End: The South End neighborhood of Charlotte is located just south of uptown. It gets its name from South Boulevard which runs directly through the area. Industrial buildings and factories that are no longer running have been turned into lofts and condos. South End is primarily made up of residences, restaurants, shops, and offices.
· Dilworth: The Dilworth neighborhood was developed in the 1890’s and was Charlotte’s first streetcar suburb. Today the neighborhood is popular with the younger generation due to beautiful houses that were built at the turn of the century. The area is centered on East Boulevard.
· Elizabeth: This neighborhood got its name from the Lutheran college Elizabeth College which was founded in 1897. In the early 1900’s the area grew quickly after a trolley system was established and made a stop in the neighborhood.
· Myers Park: Myers Park is one of the most desirable neighborhoods in the city of Charlotte. There are several large homes that line the beautiful streets of Myers Park.
· Plaza Midwood: Located near Myers Park this neighborhood did not experience the growth that other areas in Charlotte did during the early 1900’s. Today however Plaza Milwood is a popular place to live and many people prefer the area to other higher priced neighborhoods.
· South Park: South Park is a very upscale community. It is home to both residential homes and commercial developments. Located in Charlotte’s south central section the area offers several fine dining restaurants as well as the luxury shopping mall South Park Mall.
· Eastland: This neighborhood is home to a large portion of Charlotte’s Hispanic community. Residential homes as well as commercial properties make up Eastland. The area has a mall the Eastland Mall as well as several restaurants.
· Ballantyne: This is another upscale neighborhood in Charlotte. It is very similar to South Park in that it has both residential homes and commercial properties. There are several upscale restaurants and shops in the area.
· The Arboretum: This neighborhood centers on Arboretum Shopping Center. It is home to residential homes as well as Raintree County Club and Golf Course. It is located southeast of the uptown area.
· NoDa: This area is considered Charlotte’s art district. The name is taken from North Davidson Street which the area is located around. In recent years NoDa has seen a significant amount of growth of art and entertainment establishments in the area.
· University City: University as its known to locals is by far Charlotte’s largest area with over 20,000 residents. Aside from residential properties the University neighborhood is also home to the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, a 3,200 acre industrial park known as University Research Park, Lowe’s Motor Speedway, and the states largest tourist attraction Concord Mills an outlet shopping mall.
· Biddleville: Biddleville is home to the city’s Johnson C. Smith University a once predominantly African American university that trained students to be either preachers or students. Today the university offers a number of degrees.
