Charlotte is a city that is very involved with sports. There are several professional teams and college teams that the city is home to. One of the most recognizable teams is the Carolina Panthers (NFL) who won the NFC Championship in 2003-2004 and went on to play in the super bowl only to be defeated by the New England Patriots. Charlotte also has two arena football teams. The Charlotte Bobcats which is an NBA expansion team also resides in Charlotte. The team plays at the newly finished Charlotte Bobcat Arena. The team has been widely accepted by fans after the bitter loss of their former NBA team the Charlotte Hornets in 2002. The WBNA also has a team in Charlotte the Charlotte Sting. Soccer is also represented in the city with the Charlotte Eagles which play in the United Soccer Leagues. Minor league baseball and hockey teams also call Charlotte home. But perhaps the biggest sport based in Charlotte is NASCAR racing. Almost every racing team in NASCAR is located in or near the city. A large number of NASCAR drivers also live in the city. The NASCAR Hall of Fame is currently under construction in Charlotte and will open in 2009.
