·        What is a nonprofit? A nonprofit is an organization that is set up in a legal matter so as not to pay tax. A nonprofit is recognized by the IRS as tax-exempt. It is formed for the sole purpose to serve the public interest.  
·        Types of nonprofits. There are many types of nonprofit organizations. They perform various functions including charities, educational, scientific, religious, and literary.
·        Legal status of a nonprofit. A nonprofit is established as a legal entity that is not in the business to make a profit like a corporation. Instead, they use what funds are available and received from outside sources to perform their services to the general public.  
·        A nonprofit is incorporated. A nonprofit organization that is incorporated acts like a regular corporation with the exception there are no shareholders to deal with.
·        IRS gives nonprofits a certain designation. When a nonprofit registers for tax-exempt status, they are given the designation by the IRS as a 501(c)(3). This means that any contributions giving to this organization are tax deductible.
