As stated above, the biggest part of the money that nonprofits make is through fundraising. There are many different events performed throughout the year that nonprofits use to collect money. So the nonprofit needs a way to influence people to give up their hard earned money to the nonprofit organization. To be successful at fundraising requires certain skills. In order to be able to raise funds successfully you need someone who can do the following:
- Simply ask for a gift. Don’t wait for an opportunity to come along. Just do it.
- While working on a fundraising project act professional at all time. Also look professional. Do not wear torn jeans or tee shirt.
- While on the job, always be accounting for your actions. Whatever you say and do, take responsibility.
- When dealing with people, don’t lie to them. People can see right through a lie. If you don’t believe in what you are doing, stop and ask for something else to do.
- When talking to people, speak with power and conviction. Make the people know you mean business and know what you are talking about.
- If you find you can’t do the work, find someone you can trust to do it. Or ask the organization to replace you.
- Whoever you speak to, always use motivation in your voice. By being a good motivator, you will have a better chance at motivating the people to donate to your organization freely.
Just as with volunteering, fundraising can also be spread by means of the Internet. Next time you want to do a fundraiser, think about the Internet. You can send email to prospects, set up a form on a web site for people to fill out, place well-written and well-paced ads on search engines, and even place text ads on pay-per-click sites. With technology the way it is today, securing funding online is easier than ever before.
