A key part of any non-profit business is usually its volunteer department. However, all of those smiling face and willing hands standing at your front door ready to work can be an incredible blessing or they can be a staggering burden. It all depends on how you recruit and manage your volunteers. Unfortunately some people hear “volunteer” and think “less capable,” allowing their volunteer programs to fall into unready, and perhaps unworthy, hands. On the other hand, there are non-profit businesses who have entire community building programs (or whatever your organization does) that are run almost entirely by the work of volunteers – and they’re high quality, too!
So, how do you get volunteers? Do you just take any willing soul? What do you do with them once you have them? What are some ways to encourage volunteers and help them feel appreciated, since they’re not being paid? The answers to all of these questions are crucial to understand when working with volunteers – whether you have two or two hundred.
