Where does grant money come from?

Grants are usually contributed by sponsors with specific interests in scientific, cultural, or philanthropic research and work. Private organizations will also award grants to participants in fields of interest to them; their purpose is not only to support the activity and training in this subject area but also to increase the possibility of potential commercial interest.

The money for grants comes from a variety of places. Some of these places are listed below:

• Wealthy individuals. Especially for tax cut purposes, in addition to any philanthropic desires, individuals with a lot of money often contribute to grants or create grant programs of their own.
• Other individuals. Even those people who do not have millions often give to grant programs through their place of employment, their local banks, or other methods. Once again, it is not only a way to help better society, it is also a wise tax move.
• Businesses. From your insurance company to your cell phone provider, from your local greeting card store to the organization that makes your breakfast cereal – most businesses give considerable amounts of money every year to research, education, and other types of grants.
• Government. For the betterment of its citizens, the state and federal governments have a lot of money allocated for grants.
• Foundations. Foundations are key players in supplying funds for grants. In fact, many of the financial sources listed previously, such as wealthy individuals and businesses, organize or support foundations which will handle their contributions for them.
