In 1522, Spanish settlers took the land of Nicaragua away from the native Aztecs and Mayans that originally lived there and killed a majority of them in the process. Nicaragua stayed under the control of the Spanish for the next 300 years. This fact changed around the year 1838, when Nicaraguans officially won their independence from Spain. While there were Spanish soldiers stationed in Nicaragua during the entire time period of their control, a French invasion on their own soil forced to Spain to focus most of their attention on the most pressing matter at hand, which was defeating the French. During this time, the Nicaraguan people raised up, with the help of the British, and overtook the small amount of Spanish forces that were left and little was done to try and hang on to the country. They then declared themselves a free country. However, the British did not help the Nicaraguans out of the goodness of their hearts. They did not want the Spanish to have power over the country because they wanted control over it themselves. Thus continues the never ending struggle for power and control.
