The region of the Atlantic Lowlands is located on the eastern side of the country. It borders the Caribbean Sea, which connects to the Atlantic Ocean. The Central region is located in the northern middle of the country. It lies directly between the Atlantic Lowlands region and the Pacific Lowlands region. The Pacific Lowlands region is located on the western side of the country. It borders the Pacific Ocean. Of the six major cities in Nicaragua, four are located in the Pacific Lowlands region. These cities are Managua, which is the capitol of the country, Leon, Granada, and Jinotega. The other two cities are located in the Central region. These two cities are Esteli and Matagalpa. There are no major cities in the Atlantic Lowland region, though it is scarcely populated. Most of the small population in that area are made up of the indigenous tribes of Nicaragua that have lived there for hundreds of years. A vast majority of the population of Nicaragua is located in the region of the Pacific Lowlands, near the western coast.
