Nicaragua is the largest country in Central America. It is bordered by the Pacific Ocean on its western coast, the Caribbean Sea on its eastern coast, Honduras on its northern border, and Costa Rica on its southern border. The country is divided into three main regions. The Pacific Lowlands lay on the western side of the country, which is the side that borders the Pacific Ocean. The Atlantic Lowlands lay on the eastern side of the country, which is the side that borders the Caribbean Sea. In between these two regions is a region called the Central region. It lays directly between the two Lowland regions and sits in the middle of the country. Within these different regions lie the major cities of Nicaragua. Managua is the capitol of the country and lies in the Central region. Leon, Granada, and Jinotega are all major cities that lie in the Pacific Lowland region. Esteli and Matagalpa are two other major cities that lie in the Central region of the country. There are no major cities that lie in the Atlantic Lowlands region. That region is occupied mostly by indigenous Nicaraguan tribes.
