Where and When to Visit New Mexico

New Mexico was once nicknamed “The Sunshine State” before taking the slogan of “Land of Enchantment.” This is because most days in New Mexico are full of sun, especially in spring and summer, making any time a good time to visit. The northern part of the state, and especially the mountain regions, do receive snowfall and boast cooler temperatures than the central and southern parts of the state. So if snow skiing piques your interest, visit during the winter. If you wish to explore the outdoor sights in the northern cities of Taos, Santa Fe and Albuquerque during warm temperatures, wait until spring or summer.

If you are planning on flying into the state, you will most likely arrive in the state’s largest airport located in Albuquerque. This is a great starting point for whatever adventure you choose to embark upon.

New Mexico is full of sights and attractions so you will have to carefully pick and choose the sights you are interested in. If you have a week to spend in the state, decide if you are mostly interested in art, history, nature or outdoor activities and plan your itinerary accordingly. So you don’t become overwhelmed, plan a week-long trip to visit the northern half of the state, and then plan another week-long trip to visit the Southern part of the state. You simply cannot see it all in one week. If you are lucky enough to have two weeks to discover New Mexico, you could adequately sample a few highlights from each region.
