Receiving the Conde Naste Traveler’s Gold List recognition is Rancho de San Juan, located 38 miles from Santa Fe in Espanola. But don’t let the drive deter you, as the 38 miles are very scenic and beautiful as the hotel is set amid 225 acres of countryside that used to be grazed by cattle. The hotel offers luxury suites and an award-winning restaurant. There are spa services available, gardens and walking trails and even its carving in a sandstone cliff. Nearby you can indulge in white-water rafting, hiking, fishing, skiing and of course historical sight-seeing.

If you’re looking for somewhere to stay in the wild, wild west, try the historic St. James Hotel located in Cimarron. The old hotel looks much like it did in 1873 when it was a rare luxury for weary travelers along the Santa Fe Trail. The hotel was built by Henri Lambert who had served as personal chef to Napoleon, Abraham Lincoln and Ulysses S. Grant. The hotel once had a full saloon, gambling rooms and lavish guest rooms. You can still see bullet holes in the ceiling from some wild west shootouts.
