New Hampshire in Seven Days
» Day One
Begin your trip on the coast. People unfamiliar with New England are sometimes shocked to discover New Hampshire has a coastline. It is only 18 miles long, but there is much to see and do in this compact area of the state.
If hitting the beach is first on your list of things to do, head to Hampton Beach. Hampton Beach State Park can be crowded, but it is usually fun and great for people-watching. Wallis Sands State Beach is usually less packed. Try dinner at Ron’s Landing, an anchor in the Hampton Beach dining scene.
For lodging in Hampton Beach, try Ashworth by the Sea. It is comprised of two buildings, the first constructed in 1912, and the second in 1979 (the first is naturally more charming). It is located just across from the beach. The beach towns along New Hampshire’s coast are filled with other great lodging choices, many terrific for the budget traveler. Hampton Beach has a particularly large selection along Ocean Boulevard.
If you tire of the sun before the day’s end, drive inland to the town of Exeter. It has lovely shops and boutiques and interesting residential architecture. It is also home to the American Independence Museum. If you happen to be there around lunch, enjoy a hearty bowl of soup with homemade bread at Loaf and Ladle.
The inland town of Exeter also has a great lodging choice in The Inn of Exeter. The inn is a fine example of Georgian-style architecture, and it houses a variety of guest rooms and family suites, all of which are decorated with a unique blend of period antiques.
