» Day Four
Take day four of your journey to visit the southwestern Monadnock Region and the home of Dartmouth College, Hanover.
From Bedford, make your way east to the towns of Peterborough, Keene and Jaffrey Center. They are lovely villages that simply ooze New England charm. If you are hungry, have lunch at Twelve Pine in Peterborough, an upscale deli housed in a former railroad building. They offer great sandwiches on homemade bread.
When you have seen enough, make your way north through the New Hampshire countryside. Visit the Cornish-Windsor Covered Bridgeto see the longest covered bridge in the country. It spans the Connecticut River between Vermont and New Hampshire and checks in at 450.5 feet long at floor level.
Once you arrive in Hanover, tour Dartmouth’s campus. Enjoy the Baker Memorial Library, the Dartmouth Bookstore and the Hood Museum of Art (one of the oldest college museums in the country).
To stay the night in Hanover, try The Hanover Inn on Wheelock Street. It originates from 1780, but now stands as a modern hotel with all the up-to-date amenities.
History buffs will love the Shaker Inn at the Great Stone Dwelling in the town of Enfield. The rooms are spread throughout the upper floors of a stone dwelling house built by the Shaker community in the 1830s.
