Lodging is plentiful in the coastal village of Portsmouth. For an upscale and historical experience, your best choice is Wentworth by the Sea on New Castle Island. The resort originally opened in 1874, but eventually shut down due to neglect. It reopened in 2003 to much fanfare. There is a full-service spa on site and a privately owned country club next door available for guests’ use.
The Martin Hill Inn Bed and Breakfast is located in a residential area a quick walk from downtown. The Inn consists of two period buildings connected by brick walkways. Built around 1815, the Main House has three guest rooms furnished with period furniture. The Guest House has four rooms.
The stately Georgian Colonial that calls The Governor’s House home was built in 1917. It was once the home of New Hampshire Governor Charles Dale. They offer four comfortable rooms in a casually elegant atmosphere.
Ashworth by the Sea in Hampton Beach is comprised of two buildings, the first constructed in 1912, and the second in 1979 (the first is naturally more charming). It is located just across the beach.
The beach towns along New Hampshire’s coast are filled with lodging choices, many great for the budget traveler. Hampton Beach has a particularly large selection along Ocean Boulevard.
The inland town of Exeter has a great choice in The Inn of Exeter. The inn is a fine example of Georgian-style architecture, and it houses a variety of guest rooms and family suites, all of which are decorated with a unique blend of period antiques.
If you like some serious history in your hotel, you will enjoy the Three Chimneys Inn in the college town of Durham, about 20 minutes from Portsmouth. The main part of the inn dates back to a shocking 1649.
