The Great North Woods

Camping is the primary lodging of choice in the Great North Woods, or the North Country as it is sometimes called. Umbagog State Park offers camp sites located on the shores of the area islands.

 

One notable exception to the common outdoor lodging of the North Country is the Balsams Grand Resort Hotel in Dixville Notch. This is an old-school resort experience if there ever was one. Jackets are required for men at dinner and jeans are considered inappropriate in public areas. It is ostentatious and grand in the most wonderful way.
