New Hampshire’s southwestern corner is referred to as the Monadnock Region, named after Mount Monadnock, the defining element in the area landscape. The city of Peterborough was settled in 1749, and much of its past revolved around being an industry hub. Its main claim to fame, however, was that it was Thorton Wilder’s inspiration in writing Our Town. The Monadnock Region also includes the towns of Fitzwilliam, Hancock, and Francestown. Also in the area is Jaffrey Center, one of New Hampshire’s loveliest villages.
