The Cornish region in western New Hampshire once thrived as an artists’ community in the 19th century. Eventually the well-to-do established summer homes here. Over the years the area evolved into a quiet and amiable part of the state. The famously recluse J.D. Salinger lives in the town of Corinth.

The town of Hanover is home to the Ivy League Dartmouth College. Early colonists who had been granted a charter from King George III to establish a college in the area first settled it in 1765. Famous Dartmouth alumni include Robert Frost, Nelson Rockefeller, and Dr. Seuss.

Lake Sunapee is great for all measures of outdoor pursuit including boating, fishing, and swimming. It acts as a summer retreat of sorts for residents of Boston and other parts of lower New England. Six miles from the lake is the town of Newport, a former mill town that exudes history even today.
