Contact the hotel directly
If you call a hotel directly you can inquire about special rates or discounts that might not be published. Facilities who cater to American tourists usually have an English-speaking operator to assist you.
Book online
Many hotel websites offer discounts if you book online. This most often applies to chains and larger hotels.
Stay outside the tourist district
Location, location, location applies when it comes to hotel accommodations in a tourist-heavy city like Amsterdam. The farther out you are willing to stay, the more money you can save.
Travel in the off-season
Busy season in Amsterdam is generally considered to be April through October, with the heaviest crowds in July and August. Tourist-heavy tulip season in the Netherlands is generally early April to mid-May, so expect rates to be higher then. Winters are usually mild in the Netherlands, and Amsterdam is typically cold, but pleasant. The streets are filled with locals rather than tourists, the attractions are far less crowded, and the hotel rooms are less expensive.
