o Executive Branch- The head of the executive branch of the Nebraska government in Governor Dave Heineman.
o Legislative Branch- The Legislative Branch of the Nebraska government is unicameral, meaning there is only one house. It is the only state in the United States that operates under this system. Members of the legislature refer to themselves as “senators”. Nebraska legislatures are all nonpartisan, meaning that they have no party affiliation listed next to their names on the ballots. This is also a system that is unique to Nebraska.
o Judicial Branch- Nebraska operates under a unified judicial system with the Nebraska Supreme Court having authority over all other Nebraska courts. Nebraska allows for capital punishment, with their sole method of execution being the electric chair.
o Federal Government Representation- Senator Chuck Hagel (Republican) and Senator Ben Nelson (Democrat) are the appointed senators for Nebraska. The three house representatives are: Jeff Fortenberry (Republican), Lee Terry (Republican), and Tom Osborn (Republican). Nebraska has been a Republican state for most of it’s history.
