o Downtown- A bustling urban area, the downtown neighborhood is home to many different restaurants, shops, bars, apartments, condos, and art galleries. With its unevenly paved streets and lampposts on the street corners, it is like stepping back into the past. Located here are the Joslyn Art Museum, the Orpheum Theatre, the Durham Western Heritage Museum, the Rose Blumkin Performing Arts Center, Jackson Works, the Civic Auditorium, and much more.
o Central- In this area of town, you’ll find the older, more established neighborhoods, some of which are on the National Register of Historic Places. Dundee is one such neighborhood with its tree-lined streets and quaint homes. Central also houses the University of Nebraska at Omaha, Elmwood Park, Memorial Park, the Omaha Community Playhouse, and the Crossroads Mall.
o West Central- This neighborhood is home to many of the cities well-to-do residents. With its expensive homes and abundant shopping centers, the West Central area is quite a place. There are also many wonderful restaurants in this area. Sightseers should take note that this is the location for the Girl’s and Boy’s Town.
o North Omaha- North Omaha is a rather historical area as it houses the Mormon Pioneer Cemetery. In fact, Fort Omaha, which used to be a military post, now functions as the main campus for Metropolitan Community College. Between North Omaha and the downtown area is Creighton University, which has excellent medical, dental, law, and liberal arts programs. Another historical landmark in North Omaha is Freedom Park, a naval/military museum containing a large number of submarines and military artifacts. They also have a large outdoor display of Second World War ships. Visitors will also enjoy a trip to Cunningham Lake, a favorite spot for boating and fishing.
o Northwest Omaha- This area is definitely suburbia, with houses and shopping malls on every corner. You’ll be sure to catch some “soccer moms” at the Tranquility Soccer complex, which contains a beautiful park and a state-of-the-art indoor ice skating rink.
o South Omaha- South Omaha is definitely the melting pot of the area, with residents from Polish, Czech, Italian, and Hispanic backgrounds. In fact, this neighborhood used to be considered it’s own city. The area is now home to many bustling shopping centers and to some of the areas most popular attractions. Among them are the Henry Doorly Zoo, Rosenblatt Stadium, Sokol Stadium, and Hitchcock Ice Rink. Just south of South Omaha is the city of Bellevue, which is a growing residential area.
o Southwest- Everywhere you look in Southwest Omaha you will find houses. Among the developments are shopping centers, cineplexes, restaurants and other conveniences. There are also a number of thriving businesses here, a few of which are Oriental Trading Company, Omaha Steaks, and Lucent Technologies.
