The hardtail mountain bike is a bike of many uses. It is the common bike for the common rider, it is the purists bike of choice, and it is used by many expert trials riders because of the ‘feel’ it allows the rider to have. Though there is constant debate on whether or not hardtails are irrelevant because of the advent of the full suspension bike, the hardtail will continue to proliferate because of its beauty an feel.
From a rider who uses both a hardtail and a full suspension bike, let me tell you there is a world of difference. It is definitely true that learning on a rigid or hardtail bike will make you a better rider. Hardtails have a responsiveness that is unique to their body style. A full suspension bike certainly engenders confidence on the trail in terms of tackling obstacles that used to seem larger than life. However, just riding a full suspension bike does not make you a better rider. In the end the bikes are just tools used on a mountain trail. If the rider does not learn to master certain moves any amount of suspension won’t matter. The hardtail will force you into being a better rider and will make your experience on a full suspension bike that much better. Technology is not always the key to a better ride.
