I am sure everyone can remember their first bike ride. The exhilaration that comes from learning how to balance on a bike is priceless. Going from training wheels, to the real thing was both exciting and scary. I can remember my first ride, I had to borrow my friends bike because I did not have one. It was a little black bike with a basket. I remember coming down the hill on our street with the wheels turning so fast it made everything wobble. Experience has a way of teaching you lessons quickly. If someone were to ask you how to ride a bike, you would probably stumble around for a while and answer with something like, “You just get on the bike and start pedaling fast enough that you don’t fall.”
After you get past the balance issue of bike riding it seems like everything else comes naturally; when to stop, how to brake, how to pop a wheelie. It all just kind of comes naturally. With mountain biking, there is a little more to it than just balancing and stopping. Mountain biking is a sport that requires you to use multiple moves on a bike to accomplish a goal. That goal might be getting over a tree stump or boulder. It might be navigating switchbacks on a trail. It may even be positioning one’s self properly for a landing after a jump. When you watch professional athletes on television many of these moves seem easy. However, these athletes spend most of their days perfecting certain moves that enable them to pull off many of the stunts they perform.
Let’s take a look at a few moves that are common in the sport of mountain biking. These moves are considered essentials riding skills within the sport.
