Mountain biking is a sport that has something for every type of rider. If cross country riding is not your style, and you want to push the outer limits of your body and mind then perhaps downhill riding is your thing. Unless you live in a place that is surrounded by huge mountains and a vibrant mountain biking community, chances are you will have to search for a place to use a downhill bike to its fullest potential. However, with the proliferation of mountain bike parks at many major ski resorts this type of riding is becoming more and more accessible.

Downhill bikes are built for terrain found at ski resorts. With their beefy suspension and seemingly endless amount of travel, these bikes are made to absorb massive jumps and drops. As with anything that is built for such a niche activity, the bikes tend to be fairly expensive. In addition to the bikes being somewhat pricey, there is also a fair amount of gear to be purchased with the bikes like: full-faced helmets, full body armor (chin pads, elbow pads, shoulder pads) and protective eye-wear (goggles or glasses). Much of this stuff can be rented if most of your riding is done at a ski resort.

Ski resorts are the new frontiers of mountain biking in regards to downhill and freeriding. Resorts offer groomed trails and man made stunts as well as plenty of bridges, dirt jumps, stunt jumps, and berms. Ski resorts have made downhill mountain bike riding accessible to the weekend enthusiast. Those who would just like to try the sport without the commitment that comes with purchasing a specialized downhill bike can do so. Though the professional level bikes are around $4500, it is possible to get a decent bike that will provide you fun and excitement for around half of that price. So gear up and hit the slopes, your downhill adventure awaits.
