A divided House committee has advanced a bill that prohibits infants and children up to eight years old from riding on motorcycles. Representative Damon Baldone, of Houma, initially sought to prohibit children up to five years of age from being passengers on motorcycles, but the House Transportation Committee changed the bill to include children up to eight years old.
Jim Champagne of the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission says children don't have the coordination to be balanced on a motorcycle.
This may sound like something that would raise a Libertarian's heckles, but honestly, what reason is there for a baby or 8-year-old to be on a motorcycle? Unless you're a spectacularly negligent parent - there is none, and if you really want to dress the little tyke up in leather and bandana, just go ahead and save yourself the trouble by painting his or her neck red.
