As their fleet of squad cars age and deteriorate, the Illinois State Police plan to federal funds to begin patrolling the highways with motorcycles.

Police officials and records indicate the state police will start putting as many as 35 motorcycles on the road by summertime to target spots in which aggressive driving results in higher numbers of accidents.

The maneuverability and greater capacity to monitor speeding of a motorcycle make them much more effective than typical squad cars. The ISP say that adding more motorcycles will be a wise move in spite of the budget problems which limit the purchase of new vehicles.
