Working in a machine shop or manufacturing facility, you’re probably involved in some aspect of using metal to make parts of different kinds. It doesn’t matter what the parts are, you are required by the order that came in to create certain parts to fill that order. Those parts could be made up of metal of different shapes and sizes. The metal that is used could be pressed, shaped, or stamped to form the shape required to produce the part or item that has been requested. In order to do this the metal has to go through stages. Each stage may be done at the same time or separated. The premise for this article will be to discuss the metal forming methods and standards used in manufacturing facilities or job shops and how it is done. The basic stages or formats that are used include metal extrusions, forming, and stamping. Each one will be covered in turn so you can learn what each procedure is and what it does. This will help you to better understand the whole process afterward. Here is a brief summary of what each process is followed by details of each process.

• Extrusion: Is where metal is used and straightened to produce certain shapes and sizes of material. These shapes could be any type. It all depends on the needs of the customer.
• Forming: In this case, metal is spun around to form certain shapes and thickness of the metal. Again the shape and thickness of the metal will depend on the requirements set forth by the customer.
• Stamping: This is where something is stamped on impressed onto the surface of metal or some type of material to produce another type of product. Stamping is usually done to create certain items like three-dimensional items or special type of lettering.
