How should I go about hiring the right workforce?

The first step towards successful workplace management is getting the right workforce to manage. What kind of hand will you deal yourself? Hiring a workforce does not guarantee anything, but it can set you up for either great failure or great success. Follow some of these hiring guidelines to set yourself up for success.

  • Don’t ignore skill and hire someone based on how well you get along: Even when you really it off with an applicant at an interview, don’t assume it’s a perfect fit. Put a hold on your emotion and make sure the person is actually qualified for the exact job.
  • Don’t ignore how well you get along with someone and hire someone based on skill: No, that’s not a typo—the opposite of the above is true as well. Just because someone is the most qualified applicant does not mean he/she is the perfect applicant. Consider how a potential employee will work with the rest of the team and will impact team morale.
  • Hire good workers: This may seem obvious, but it is worth reminding. Look for self-motivators, hard workers, and people of character. Check into an applicant’s references to make sure this is the type of person you want as part of your workforce. Hiring good workers will eventually increase your team’s productivity and will save you headaches of motivation and ethics down the road.
  • Don’t expect someone to fit into a mold: Even if an applicant is not a perfect fit for a job, don’t necessarily rule him/her out. If the applicant seems especially good, try to find a place for him/her, even if it means shifting around some other responsibilities.
  • But…make sure you have a mold: It is important, however, to have a goal in mind when you begin the hiring process. What kind of person do you need? What does the new hire have to be able to do? This will narrow your search and keep you focused.

A strong workforce makes your job infinitely easier. Take your time and consider exactly what kind of person your team needs. Solicit feedback from current team members as to what they think the team needs, as well, so that you’re already set up for good relationships within the team.
