Project management has changed the face of business society with great results. Because of project management, the Empire State Building was built in less than a year’s time using new building technology. However, there are many problems and challenges that arise that tend to overshadow the different styles and philosophies of project management. On average, projects are 222% longer than the scheduled deadline for completion. Only 44% of all projects are completed on or ahead of schedule. That means the rest of the 56% of projects are finished extremely beyond the scheduled time set to be finished. Also, on average, projects are 189% over budget by the end of project completion. This contributes to the 30% of all projects being cancelled before they are finished.
There are two issues that could be contributed to the leadership ability of the project manager to oversee each project. One is the everyday chaos and frustrations associated with the project. This is not just between personnel; it includes the unforeseen downfalls that take their toll on the project. Project management requires a highly skilled individual to put into question and have the responding answers to all of the possibilities that could be faced. The second issue that could be contributed to the leadership ability of the project manager is the ability to accurately measure the project status. A high percentage of project managers are unable to do this until it’s too late. This often speaks of the project manager’s expertise in the area of the project, knowledge of the resources available and the resource’s accessibility. These not only show the leadership ability of the project manager but the management skills also.
