As with any employment opportunity, the employee should have the proper training to perform the job being assigned. Project management requires the project manager to posses the proper training, coaching or mentoring that it would take for that particular project. Different projects require different levels of expertise since each project undertaking needs skills associated with it. For example, if “Project A” is to build a warehouse then the expertise or training would require some knowledge of building materials, resources, and those capable of performing building activities. If “Project B” is to put together a marketing campaign for an electronics store then the expertise or knowledge would need to be in marketing, commercials and people able to assist in those areas also. So the training level of the project manager should match the overall goal for the project. A project managers training level is not the only requirement for success. Can the project manager lead? More importantly, can the project manager manage? When this question is answered then it can be decided if the project manager has the right technical skills required for the project.
