Every organization is layered with people and processes that weave themselves together to construct the possibility of greatness. Jim Collins, in his epic book Good to Great, spends the entire first chapter building out the concept that “good is the enemy of great.”

In so many endeavors, we stop short of greatness at the intersection of goodness. But greatness is not accidental, nor is it superficial. Greatness happens because a leader – or a group of leaders – has a clear picture of greatness in his mind and is constructing the vision accordingly.

The size of an organization is irrelevant when it comes to greatness. It may have ten people or ten thousand people, but it is either constructed on greatness or it isn’t. Every pocket of energy in a work assignment is strapped on the back of a group of people who make up a department. And that department is either good or great.
