No, this is not Red Rock Canyon in the Western United States; this is the Red Rocks region of southwest Luxembourg. The Red Rocks region forms about eighty percent of the southern border of the country (France is on the other side of the border), but only extends north a few miles.
Luxembourg’s stable economy and relative wealth (i.e. one of the highest per capita incomes in the world) is largely tied to the Red Rocks region. Beneath the red rocks lie the ore that allowed the development of Luxembourg’s iron and steel industry. Even today, many wealthy Luxembourgers call this area home, and their homes display strikingly modern architecture.
The Red Rocks region is highlighted by Esch sur Alzette, which is on the French border and is the most populous city in the country outside of Luxembourg City. In contrast to much of Luxembourg, the city is known primarily for its business endeavors rather than its history.
If you want to visit the Red Rocks region, make Esch sur Alzette your base, and then rent a car and explore. You can find small hotels and hostels in town and the region is small enough where you can explore other towns in a single afternoon. If you don’t want to stay in Esch-sur-Alzette, hike through the woods and search for a campsite.
