Luxembourg Annual Events and Festivals

While any time is a good time to visit Luxembourg, the weather is especially ideal from late spring until early autumn. Fortunately, many of the city’s annual events and festivals also occur during this time period, so if it’s possible, consider planning your trip to coincide with one of these events.

Luxembourg celebrates its National Day on June 21, and the Grand Duke takes part in a parade through Luxembourg City. Around the same time, Echternach’s Basilica of St. Willibrord welcomes ten thousand pilgrims on the seventh Tuesday after Easter. Also in Echternach in June is the International Music Festival (it actually starts in May but continues into June). If you enjoyed that music festival, follow it up by heading north to Wiltz, which hosts a music festival of its own in July.

Luxembourg is not known for its athletics, but each July (this year it’s July 3 and 4), the nation welcomes the Tour de France. In addition, the country offers the unique Luxembourg Marathon, which is a night run.

As we move into fall, we start talking about the harvest, and the harvest in Luxembourg means wine festivals. Several towns have wine festivals, and one of the best is in Wormeldange in early September.

Finally, many towns host less publicized festivals or simple outdoor markets. In Luxembourg City, for example, there is a flea market on the second and fourth Saturdays of the month, but the smaller towns have markets as well. Wherever you are, make sure you get out and explore the town, and you never know what event you might stumble upon.
