In order for a business to prosper, the business needs to make profits. This is important in the long run. But when products start coming back there is a problem. The company needs to know how to handle this aspect of the business. If this sounds like you, before you even think of figuring out what to do first or next, you need to understand what reverse logistics is and why you need to prepare for it.
Reverse logistics refers to the returns that come back into the company for some reason or another. The product could be defective, or the customer just didn’t like the look or style of the product. Either way, returns happen. This also means that the customer is unhappy with the product. If you are running a business and this happens to you, you better have a process in place to appease that customer in a hurry or you may just lose a customer for life. Once one customer becomes dissatisfied with your product, the word will spread and more people will learn about this customer’s dissatisfaction. Before you know it you have lost more than one customer. Therefore it is imperative that you have in place a system so you can take that return, reuse it so you can make money off of it, but at the same time get a replacement product out to the customer right away.

Some companies have management procedures in place to where they can manage the returns they get. This management process is often referred to as Product Recovery Management (PRM). This management process takes the returned product or materials and takes care of it including reselling it. Reverse logistics works within this type of system but it does even more. It collects, disassembles, and processes all products, to make sure that all products or materials are fully recovered.
