Many under-cabinet lighting systems are now designed with a plug-and-use philosophy. All you really have to do is plug them in, and they’re ready to go. However, there are also the more traditional and wide-spread fixtures which do require an installation. If you would like to install the under-cabinet lighting yourself, if it very possible.
Although the process is not long or strenuous, you should consider before beginning if you feel comfortable with the task. If you don’t, or if you have no prior experience with wiring, consider calling an electrician who can install the under-cabinet lighting for you easily and quickly. If you do feel confident, simply follow the instructions that come with your particular fixture. While they may vary with brand and style, they will probably have no more than six or seven steps and require a hammer, a screwdriver, a drill, some wire cutters, some tape, and possibly a few other easily obtainable tools. Once the installation has been completed, you will not only have your new task and mood lighting, you will also have a few dollars saved and the satisfaction of knowing you did it yourself.
Whichever type of under-cabinet lighting that you do choose to install, make sure that you put it toward the front edge of the cabinets so that it lights up the entire countertop (or shelves or another place) rather than the wall. If at all possible, make sure to install lights continuously, so that the countertops or shelves are evenly lit. And you can easily fix a glare on shiny shelves or counters by using frosted bulbs or lenses.
