The use of sconces in the lighting of a room can add elegance, charm, character and style to your room. Sconces are a wonderful way to accent mirrors, favorite prints or doorways by flanking these items with a sconce on each side. They effectively draw attention to the décor of any room. They are also often used for task lighting such as lighting a hallway, foyer, bathroom or reading area, to provide extra lighting in these spaces in a stylistic way.
The website of www.rejuvenation.com has many suggestions about the use of sconces. They say, “Wall sconces visually expand a room by providing uplight and ambient light. Use them as a complement to recessed downlighting, and place them where they appear aesthetically balanced in the room.” They also recommend a mounting height for sconces of 66" from the center of the sconce to the floor. Sconces can also be used to create intimacy in a large room by using those with low wattage and diffused light. In doing this, you will shift the focus of the room to the characteristics which you would like to accentuate, instead of to the vastness of the room. In a small room that you wish to visually enlarge, you can effectively use sconces with lights that thrust their glow upward in order to create the illusion of spaciousness.
If you are adding sconces to a room that already contains other light fixtures, it is very easy to find a style that will combine with the existing lighting of the room. A quick internet search will give you more choices than you may even want, but you will be able to find such a variety of styles that you should be able to easily find one to match what you already have. If you are changing all of the lighting in your room, then most internet sights will offer suggestions of light fixtures of varying kinds that go well with the sconces that you have chosen. Many of the suggestions come from the same line of a particular brand, so that you can tie all the lighting in your room together.
