Why is exterior lighting important?

Exterior lighting has two main purposes – adding to the safety/security of a home and adding to the beauty of a home. While they may be small and seemingly insignificant, simple exterior lights can go very far in the journey of making a house a home. Exterior lighting is very important to promote the home’s:

-         Safety.
Lights can help prevent nasty falls, especially where there may be steps or objects blocking the path. While it might seem simple, a few lights can help prevent much pain.

-         Security.
While everyone likes to think of their home as being a very safe place, the truth still remains that unfortunate and scary things like break-ins and assaults do happen in neighborhoods. Lights not only widen your visibility at night and prevent others from sneaking up on you, they also allow you to identify someone at the door before opening it. Lights with motion sensors also help discourage criminals, since their motion – however discreet – causes lights to shine on them.

-         Beauty.
From Christmas lights to garden accent lights, exterior lighting can be a very helpful tool in unifying and increasing the beauty of a home. By thoughtfully combining practical lights (such as floodlights on the garage) and ambient lights (such as two sconces on either side of the front door), the outside of the house and the landscape can become a lovely and inviting place.
