» Where do I need exterior lighting?
The places that you’re going to use exterior lighting will have a major effect on the comprehensive appearance of your home. The choice and placement of light fixtures can be the most crucial aspect of creating a luxurious outdoor appearance. So the first thing to consider when placing the exterior lighting is why you want it. The places where you’re going to use exterior lighting are directly affected by the reasons you are using them. For example:
- If your primary purpose for the lights is safety, you will want to install lights on the walkway, at the garage/driveway, and on the porch.
- If your purpose is beauty, you will be using lights around the landscape, accent lights that bring out exquisite points of the home exterior, and decorative lights perhaps having to do with holidays or themes.
Following are several suggestions about the safest and most attractive possible locations for your exterior lighting.
- The main driveway and walkway should have outdoor lighting fixtures to help maintain the safety of family and visitors.
- All entrances should be well lit both from the walls and the ceiling. This will make the doorway both attractive and safe.
- For additional security around gates, garages, and a large lawn, floodlights and spotlights or even a post light are excellent fixtures.
- Uplights in trees and low voltage pathway fixtures can help highlight the landscaping.
- Lighted address numbers at the front door help your house be easily located.
- In any area where you may need light as someone approaches, lights with motion sensors can be used.
