» Choosing a Chandelier for Your Space
When selecting a chandelier, one must first determine the function of the fixture.
What room will the chandelier be used in?
Most chandeliers are used for general lighting in dining rooms and can be accompanied by coordinating sconces and lamps. However, chandeliers work well in many other rooms of the home or in an office. Kitchens offer a unique place for chandeliers. They are often hung over a work space such as a center island and can include such features as a pot rack or other storage. Entryways can be a place to display large ornate chandeliers. Chandeliers could also be used in home offices or even bathrooms. From dining room to bathroom, a chandelier will definitely impact the ambiance of any room.
What are your lighting needs?
General lighting as well as task lighting can be accomplished with chandeliers. Task lighting is used for daily activities such as reading, writing, or cooking. Total wattage should be between 200 and 400 watts for sufficient light. Many chandeliers contain pendants that enhance visual clarity and keep the eyes from fatigue. Up-lighting, down-lighting and combination lighting are also available. Once you have determined the type of lighting that is needed for the space, select a chandelier that has the appropriate number of lamps needed. Chandeliers can contain any number of lamps.
How large is the space?
A chandelier that is too large can overwhelm a room, where as a chandelier that is too small can look lost. In general, a room with dimensions of 10 feet by 10 feet can adequately hold a chandelier that is 17 to 20 inches in diameter. A room with the dimensions of 12 feet by 12 feet can hold a chandelier that is 20 to 24 inches in diameter. A large chandelier with a diameter of 24 to 36 inches should be placed in a room with dimensions of 14 feet by 14 feet or larger. For a chandelier over a dining table, choose a chandelier with a diameter equal to one-half the width of the table or at least 12 inches narrower than the width of the table. The chandelier should be hung approximately 30 inches above the tabletop. For a chandelier in an entryway, add the width and length dimensions of the room together. The total equals the chandelier diameter to be used.
