Chandeliers are ceiling mounted light fixtures with two or more lamp bearing arms. The earliest chandeliers were used in churches to effectively illuminate large halls and were constructed of wooden arms bearing candles. During the 15th century, chandeliers came to be a status symbol and were more often constructed from cast brass with long curved arms and were mostly for decorative use. Presently, chandeliers can be a casual fixture used mainly for the function of lighting or they can be more formal, adding elegance and beauty to any room in which they are hung, especially a dining room. The most popular types of chandeliers are very ornate, often being brass or gold plated or containing crystal. These types of chandeliers are used primarily for their decorative light scattering properties.
