You should install ceiling fans more than seven feet above the floor and, in most cases, they should be in the center of the room. Above all, consult the installation section of your owner’s manual, as there may be instructions specific to your model. While fan installation does not require a great amount of previous knowledge, it will help to have some basic electric wiring knowledge and experience.

You can’t install a ceiling fan with a standard light box; rather, you need to install it onto something that gives it support from the ceiling, such as a junction box or mounting bracket. Turn off the power to the room, and then drill a small hole where you want to put the center of the fan. Then, if you are using a ceiling light junction box, put it over the hole and trace around it before cutting over your tracing with a jigsaw. Finally, attach the junction box to a board and drop it from the attic through the hole you just cut. The board will hold the junction box from above the ceiling.

Once the junction box is placed, hook up the wiring for the fan through the box and attach the fan’s motor to the junction box. Finally, attach the blades to the motor house using screws, and turn on the power to see if your fan works. If you ever want to take your fan down, simply do everything in reverse.
