There are many fixtures available to aid in creating accent lighting in your home. Lighting fixtures themselves can express a mood. Just as furniture comes in different styles such as traditional or contemporary, so do lighting fixtures. Some fixtures are lavish and ornate, while others may be very simple. As with the furniture you select, the style of the lighting fixtures should suite the mood and décor of the room.

• Lamps – Lamps tend to provide a cozy feel to a room. They generally come in traditional, contemporary, or transitional styles. Lamps are the easiest and least expensive lighting to change in a room.
o Traditional – Made from a variety of materials such as brass, wood, or crystal. Lamps have an assortment of shades made from linen to glass.
o Contemporary – Includes lamps in modern styles with clean lines. Contemporary lamps can be very decorative or simply functional such as desk or table lamps.
o Transitional – Designs blended together form a transitional lamp. Normally, these are decorative lamps.
• Recessed lights – A good source of light that gives an uncluttered look. Recessed lighting is used to brighten dark areas in your home such as corners, or to highlight areas. When using recessed lighting you must plan carefully as it will be very difficult to make significant changes in the layout of your room at a later date.
• Rope lighting – A good source of accent lighting inside or out. Rope lighting is manufactured in long tubes housing many small lights. They come in different colored tubes that are always lit. Some rope lights blink using different patterns of light. Rope lights can be used in lengths up to 150 feet. This is a very economical form of lighting most commonly used above the kitchen cabinets or around decks in the backyard.
• Grow lights – Grow lights are used to illuminate houseplants. They are available in many shapes and sizes. The bulbs are designed to work with specific houseplants so be sure you buy the correct light for your plant. Grow lights burn brighter than a normal light bulb. Keep the grow light a minimum of one inch and a maximum of three inches from the plant.
• Floating solar lights – Used to highlight a swimming pool, pond, or fountain without having to run power to the area you wish to illuminate. These lights are charged by the sun during the day and light up at night. They are waterproof and do not have a risk of shock. They can float in any water that has a clear view of the sun.
