» What can I do in between harvesting my Vegetable Garden?
In the months after harvesting your vegetables, you can take the following basic steps to keep your garden prepared for the next season’s plants:
- Stay ahead of the game by keeping your gardens clean and free of debris and dead plants. This will help prevent insects from damaging your garden during the winter.
- If leaves begin to pile up on your garden, rake them up and add them to your compost pile or set them aside to use as mulch.
- Continue to water and turn your soil regularly throughout the winter. Even turn the soil in beds that don’t contain plants. This will expose weed seeds and soil-borne insects to weather and birds.
- Take this time to clean your garden tools. This will preserve them in a way that will help get things done more efficiently once the winter is over.
