Typically tree services will schedule annual tree trimming and thinning over the late fall and winter months. This does not mean that they won’t trim or thin in spring or summer. Like landscapers, tree services have certain “seasons” for various tasks.

The late fall and winter months are good for trimming because the leaves have fallen and it is much easier to get an idea of shape and see the limbs on the inside. During this time trees are dormant as far as growth so there is no chance of hindering any growth for the coming year. Obviously deciduous trees give a real push in the early spring months of April and May. Any trimming or thinning during this time is not recommended. Trimming or thinning during the new growth period may stunt growth and, depending on the trees age, it could actually kill it. Conifers typically give their big growth spurt in late summer. Planting or altering conifers during this time will certainly damage the tree.
