When the words “outdoor power equipment” are written side-by-side visions of gigantic men in overalls smoking a stogie tend to surface in one’s mind. Well needless to say times are changing. Now it is not out of the ordinary to find a housewife on a zero-turn riding mower listening to her ipod while she sculpts tight lines in the lawn. Gone are the stereotypes assigning scruffy men to the outdoors banging around on power equipment.

Outdoor power equipment may be defined as any heavy-duty yard equipment that is powered either by electric or gas engine. Here are a few examples of some common outdoor power equipment: riding lawn mowers, gas/electric hedge trimmers, weed-whacker, pole-pruner, leaf-blowers, snow-blowers, edger, (flower) bed-shaper, sod-cutter, backhoe, front loader, skid-steer loader, pressure washer, chainsaw, log-splitter, wood-chipper.

Outdoor power equipment serve many purposes. Generally the title of the equipment tells the homeowner what purpose the equipment serves. It is important for the homeowner to be sure to read and follow the directions for use of all power equipment. It is not uncommon for certain safety materials to accompany the equipment.

For the average consumer power equipment comes with a reasonable price tag. Most manufacturers distribute a line for the homeowner and a more professional line for contractors.
