You should buy a mower that will be able to handle the size of your yard. The average lot is about a quarter of an acre, which is totally manageable with a self-propelled push mower. With, anything over a quarter of an acre it is recommended you go with a riding mower.

There are two options in regards to riding mowers. The newest rage is the “zero-turn” rider. This mower is steered with two handles, with the operator basically sitting over the engine with his/her feet on the mower deck. These mowers vary in horsepower and offer the most efficient capabilities in mowing. However, because of their advanced steering systems they typically are the most expensive models.

As discussed in the overview, the belly-deck riding mower is the most common among homeowners. These mowers are typically more stable, are safer on hills, cost less and have fewer parts to maintain. If you don’t have the funds to purchase one of the “zero-turn” mowers then a belly-deck riding mower is the way to go.
