How low do I cut my lawn?

You should never cut off more than two thirds of the total length of grass. This is unhealthy for the grass roots. A good rule-of-thumb in regards to length is three inches. It is a good idea not to let the grass get any higher than six or seven inches before cutting. Anything more than this may cause damage to the roots.

Some golf courses keep their fairways at 2 ½ inches. This is an acceptable length, but it is not recommended to go any lower. Golf courses keep tees and putting greens at an unbelievably short length. Golf courses can do this because they use special grasses designed for extremely short lengths.
