Aeration is the technical term for creating space in your lawn. An aerator is a machine that takes pistons like objects and injects them into your lawn. The pistons are hollow on the sides enabling the piston to be pushed into the lawn and drawn out thus leaving behind a plug of grass and soil. This process basically creates tiny little plugholes all over lawn. These holes are at the root level of your grass. What this does is create space in the soil for the grass roots to spread out and be less dense. The space created enables the roots of the grass to grow out and grow stronger.

This is also good for your lawn in that it allows for moisture to be distributed better in the lawn. A hard, dense yard is not always the best environment for maximum grass growth. Remember, in order to grow to its fullest potential grass needs good light, air, rich soil, and space. An area that gets poor sunlight, is not well drained, and does not have space to stretch out will not be a good area to grow grass. It is also good to remember with new houses that many contractors throw down a generic seed on top of sub-soil, which is usually hard packed rocky soil; it may even be more clay than good topsoil. Aeration keeps the soil loose enough to allow the grass to grow to its full potential.
