When to Fertilize

You want to begin fertilizing your lawn in early October. Many people think they should start in spring but this can actually harm your lawn. Fertilizing in the spring promotes more top growth than root growth. The shallow root systems are unable to sustain lawns through the dry and cold winter weather.

You should apply the fertilizer on a day when the average temperature drops to 50 degrees.

After this initial fall fertilizing, you should fertilize again in late May, late June, and late August.
