Reasons to Have a Fence

There are many different reasons for people to get fences. The following represent a few of the motives that individuals have for wanting to purchase and install fencing. The benefits of having a fence include:

-               Stopping pets from getting out of the yard. Many families with dogs like to leave their pet outside while they go to work or school. This allows the dog to be free to get exercise and air, while also preventing them from using the restroom inside the home if the owner is gone for a while. Fencing allows the pets to roam the yard without the possibility of them running away. If you currently have a fence that your pet does still escape from, you can solve this problem several ways. You could consider building a taller or sturdier fence. Some pets can jump the fence or know how to climb the chain links. If this is the case, installing a fence that is taller or made of a different material can solve the problem. Another simple technique is to plant bushes on the inside of your existing fence. This make it nearly impossible for some pets (although there are always those creative ones) to climb under, over, or through the fence.

-               Keeping children inside their play area. A good reason to get a fence is to make sure that children are protected while they are playing outside. This is a great method of setting up boundaries for children who are bound to run, especially if you live on a busy street.

-               Protecting the pool area. Many people with pools consider getting fences. First of all, a fence around the pool area protects the pool from people and animals that should not be in it. This includes young children. In many places, laws require that those with in-ground pools have fences to protect children from falling into the water without anyone watching them. A fence around the pool can also provide privacy for those sunbathing and swimming.

-               Preventing unwanted animals from entering the yard.  The biggest animal concern in cities and suburbs is usually stray dogs and other animals that may wander into your yard and possibly ruin things by digging, using the restroom, or disturbing other pets. In the country, the animal types widen. Raccoons may get into trash bins, even empty them all over the yard. Deer may eat prized gardens. Or skunks may wander freely – a concern no one wants to have to worry about! Fencing helps prevent these problems. Even for animals that may dig, fencing may be built into the ground.

-               Maintaining privacy. For many people, a fence is simply an extension of closed doors. Perhaps they want to lie out in the sun or enjoy a romantic evening with their spouse on the back porch without the worry of spectators. Fencing provides a certain level of privacy, enabling individuals to feel at home in their yard.

-               Adding to the ambiance.  For many people, a fence is merely an extension of their landscape. A beautiful yard requires a beautiful fence. The “White-Picket Fence” ideal gives an example of this principle. For many, that white picket fence just adds to the homey, picturesque feeling of a home and yard.

-               Preserving the neighbor relationship. The poet Robert Frost praised fencing in his poem “Mending Wall” when he stated that “Good fences make good neighbors.” Utilizing all of the previous benefits of fences, the final advantage of fences is that they create good boundaries between homes. By keeping your dog out of your neighbor’s yard and keeping your neighbor’s kids out of yours, a fence helps neighbors respect one another and maintain a strong, neighborly relationship.
